Used Golf Club Condition Grades, Explained
Condition grades only help if they're consistent and honest. Here's exactly what each grade means on a pre-owned club, and how to tell normal use from a problem.
The condition scale
New — unused, often still in wrapper. Like New — played little to none, no meaningful marks. Excellent — light, normal use with minimal marks and full groove life. Good — clearly played, visible wear on the sole and face, but fully playable. Fair — heavy cosmetic wear or older clubs; priced accordingly and honest about it.
The grade describes cosmetics and wear, not playability — a 'Good' iron set still performs. It just shows its rounds.
What wear is completely normal
Bag chatter (light scratches where clubs knock together), sole scratches from turf, and minor paint-fill wear are all cosmetic and expected on any played club. None of it affects how the club performs.
What to watch out for
Worn-smooth grooves (real spin loss, especially on wedges), cracks or caved-in spots on driver/wood faces, rust pitting on the face, and any bend in the shaft or hosel. These affect performance or point to a problem — and a good grader will always call them out rather than hide them.
